How is the weather today. A homemade meteorology game for children


When we adults wake up, one of the first things we do is look out the window and check what the weather is outside. This information for children is not relevant, does not worry them and goes unnoticed by them. However, it is important that they learn to differentiate the types of meteorological phenomena that can occur throughout the year, depending on the time in which we are. Therefore, we propose a home weather game for children called 'What the weather is today'.

It is an ideal activity to do daily from 2 years. And due to its simplicity of preparation, it can be applied both at home with families and in the day-to-day within the school. Materials:

  • Glass jars with lid
  • Folios
  • Markers or crayons
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Buttons
  • Pompons
  • Wooden beads
  • Cotton
  • Elastic bands
  • Scotch tape

Following these simple 3 steps we can carry out our activity:

1. On a sheet we draw a picture of a sun, a cloud, and another cloud accompanied by rain. You can do so many atmospheric phenomenaIt's whatever you want: wind, snow, fog ... Depending on what you want to work on.

2. Then we color each drawing and we stick it on the inside of each boat with a little adhesive tape.

3. Now, it only remains that we fill each bottle with different materials and that's it.

And what do we put in each bottle? The interior of each boat will be filled with simple objects, basically crafts that we can have at home. Each boat will be within a chromatic range of color according to the atmospheric phenomenon, thus, the sunny day will be represented by warm colors such as yellow and orange, while cloudy and rainy days by cold tones such as gray and white and shades blue respectively.

The following describes what each bottle contains:

- Sunny day: pompoms and beads of different sizes and pipe cleaners.

- Cloudy day: small pompoms, cotton and buttons of different sizes.

- Rainy day: Pompoms and beads of different sizes.

The activity can be carried out as I have mentioned previously, both at home and at school.

If you want to bring it up to the children in the classroom, a good time to do it is every weekday during the assembly. And the activity could be like this: a boy or a girl will look out the window and see what the weather is like outside. Later, he will take the corresponding boat, move it and sound. In this way, children will know what the weather is like and will be able to identify the name of that meteorological phenomenon that is happening on that day.

Another option is to choose a boy or a girl each day and who Randomly take a boat and ask the rest of your classmates if the weather outside is the same than the one representing the boat. For example, 'is it raining today?' If the students answer in the negative, they take another boat and repeat the same question with different weather conditions. When the answer is affirmative, the boat is rung.

We can make as many boats as we want to show meteorological phenomena or they occur more frequently in our city.

This activity has multiple benefits for your sons and daughters framed within several themes:

- Stimulation and development of the senses
The weather boats also act as sensory boats because of all the materials that compose them, that is, being filled with buttons, beads, cotton, pompoms, etc. It awakens in the child a series of acoustic and visual sensations that will stimulate the senses and enhance cognitive development.

In addition, by introducing them in the pot they can experiment with them, check their texture and dimensions, as well as their hardness, in this way they will be stimulating the sense of touch.

- Knowledge of the environment in which they live
Children can find out if they live in a city where it rains a lot or a little, if it is too hot or too hot, etc. You can keep a daily log in which you can write down the weather each day of the week and count at the end how many days it has rained, been sunny or cloudy. So we are also working on mathematics through counting.
