Homemade board game for children to learn Roman numerals


Board games are usually a fantastic educational resource because they help the development of learning and memory of children through the knowledge of the rules or rules of each game. Materials:

  • Black, red, green, blue and yellow eva rubber
  • White glue and a brush
  • Paper and scissors

The instructions and directions for this game are simple! Take note of them ... and play!

- This is a very fun game for 4 players. It is perfect for afternoons, weekends and family or friends gatherings. The operation and the rules are easy to understand, so all children (always taking into account their level of knowledge) can participate in this activity in some way.

- This game consists of a board, equivalence tokens, player tokens and a dice. You can make all this yourself as we show you below.

- The game consists of going through all the boxes, rolling the dice to know how many we can advance. If we land, for example, in a box that says '17', we have to try to convert the figure to Roman numerals using and putting the equivalence cards in the correct order, that is, XVII.

Each time a box is solved, the solution will be written down in a notebook. Each result box can also be marked with a marker. If you laminate the board, erasing the marker is as easy as dipping a cotton ball in alcohol or acetone and rubbing.

- If we fail, we subtract one point. If we get it right, we add a point.

- We must bear in mind that it is agame is cooperative and that the objective is to complete the board together. The game ends when the board is resolved.

The first thing we are going to make is the board. Let's see what you need step by step.

1. Make a table that has 5 columns x 8 rows on a white sheet of paper. We recommend that the dimensions of each cell or box be approximately 3cm x 3cm. You can draw the table by hand with the help of a marker and a ruler, or you can make it on the computer to print it later.

2. You have to check the 'exit' box and start filling in each box with numbers. These have to be varied to make the game more fun: from simple numbers of one or two figures, to the most complex.

You can guide yourself from our board and enter addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You can also enter numbers in an original way, using data or questions. This way you will be able to capture the curiosity of your children!

3. Once the board is done it is advisable to laminate it for its conservation. Especially if you want to mark the boxes you turn out with a marker. We also recommend that you make one or two extra boards, so that it is not always the same and the entertainment is more varied.

And what would a game about Roman numerals be without its equivalence tiles? Roman numerals are made up of letters. I, V, X, L, C, D and M. Do you remember what decimal each letter represents? If you don't remember right now, nothing happens, we are going to provide you with all the information you need, but first, we are going to make equivalence cards, it's very simple!

4. You just have to make another table, this time from 5 columns by 7 rows.

5. Next, you have to fill in all the boxes in the first row with the letter I. You already have it? Now fill in all the boxes in the second row with the letter V, and so on until you write all the letters and complete the table. Remember: I, V, X, L, C, D and M. You will get 5 tokens for each letter.

6. To continue, you have to trim the table and stick it with white glue on eva rubber red in color; Cut the board again and glue it on black eva rubber. Cut the table again and then cut the rows and then the squares, so you will get some very manageable tiles.

As a review, we remind you that the equivalences of Roman numerals are:

  • I = 1
  • V = 5
  • X = 10
  • L = 50
  • C = 100
  • D = 500
  • M = 1000

To represent the Roman numerals you will have to use the equivalence cards, combining them and ordering them correctly to represent the solution of each box.

We are only missing the player tokens and the dice! If you have other board games, you can use the chips and dice you have at home, but we encourage you to complete the game and do it yourself! So it will be unique.

7. To make the players' chips you only need cut out 4 small squares, one of each color:red, green, blue and yellow. Then, you have to stick the pictures on black foam rubber and cut again.

8. To make the die, we have used a piece of styrofoam that we have shaped into a cube and measures 7cm x 7cm. It is very striking and manageable, your children will love it!

You can make the dice with other materials. For example, you can form a cube by gluing together several cardboard squares or make a dice with cardboard from a template.

9. It is convenient to reinforce it with eva rubber and personalize it with Roman numerals. To do this, you have to cut out 6 red eva rubber squares that have the same measurement as the faces of the cube.

10. When the 6 squares are ready, you have to paste or draw the Roman numerals from 1 to 6 on each of them, that is: I, II, III, IV, V and VI. And finally, glue each square on the faces of the cube. If you want to speed up this process, you can use a hot glue gun. This way, you won't have to wait any longer!
