Can you imagine what a bouncing egg would be like? If it is difficult for an adult to imagine it for a boy or a girl, it is even more so, since their reality is forged according to their experiences and experiences. And that's what we're going to do, a curious and amazing experiment that will surprise the little ones and that will not leave the older ones indifferent. A jumping egg! Given its simplicity in terms of the materials needed, it can be developed at any time, and with a little patience, get the result and have a fun and different time.

- Glass jar with lid
Following these simple four steps we can carry out our activity:
1. We take a normal egg, the kind that can be bought in supermarkets or food stores, and put it in a glass jar.
2. We pour vinegar until the egg is completely covered. We have used white wine vinegar.
3. We close the jar with the lid and we let it rest for about 48 hours.
4. After these two days, we open the jar carefully and pour the vinegar. Then under the tap water you have to clean the egg well. We dry it and put it to throw!
But how is it possible for an egg to bounce the way the one in our experiment does? The eggshell is limestone, so when it comes into contact with vinegar a chemical reaction occurs that causes it to dissolve. A thick, rubbery layer will also form, as the acetic acid in the vinegar will denature part of the white. This is what allows the egg to become soft and not break when thrown to the ground.
Since we cover the egg with vinegar we can observe the following facts as time passes.
- First 24 hours
We observe how instantaneously bubbles are formed around the egg, that is because the chemical reaction is already taking place. As the hours go by, the egg cracks and loses its shell, a foam forms on the surface and increases its size.
- At 48 hours
The smell of vinegar begins to be much more intense, the color of the egg clears by the membrane that covers it, its size has increased considerably. Its texture appears elastic.
- Jumping egg
Once we have removed the egg, it will smell a lot of vinegar, when we wash it we will check how a membrane that covered it comes off, when we put it in the light we can see how the white differs from the yolk and of course check its elasticity by making it bounce.
From a height not very high we will drop it on a smooth surface and we will see how it bounces several times, instead if we let it fall from a higher height or simply prick it with a toothpick, the egg will break, thus leaving a membrane and totally differentiating the white from the yolk, an ideal educational moment to explain the difference that exists between the two children.
Do boys and girls know what an egg is? If you ask this question, they will surely answer something related to what comes from chickens and what is eaten. We can take advantage of the tessitura to explain how the process develops from when the hen lays it until we eat it, in what ways we can cook an egg, such as: hard-boiled, boiled or fried egg.
