Cutting-edge technology to avoid exchanges of babies in the hospital at birth


Every day new technologies appear that revolutionize our life and make it more modern, more practical and safer, and this applies to any field, even reaching the most important moment of every human being, such as birth. Can you imagine a system by which avoid exchanges of babies in the hospital the moment they arrive in this world? Methods that, fortunately, are already a reality in some countries and that can save a drama in families in which their babies are switched at birth.

This new technology has the purpose of avoiding changes, theft or kidnapping of newborns, which may happen in public or private maternity centers after their birth, leaving the parents, especially the mother, devastated and without security or the certainty of having your baby again.

It seems like a soap opera or movie story, but every day more cases happen, where it is known from newborns that have been exchanged or stolen at the time of separation from the mother, which unfortunately are not discovered or if it is achieved over the years, perhaps it would be too late.

This new technology, which is being used in countries such as Brazil and Spain, works quite safely to identify the newborn at birth, since current identification systems are vulnerable and can lead to identification errors, which can be lend to carry out the exchange, theft or kidnapping of the baby.

This technology combines a biometric reader or record, and what is called RFID, which is a radio frequency identifier. The biometric reader or registry takes the fingerprints of the newborn, but since these impressions are very small, since they are their fingers, the entire hand is placed on the sensor, instead of individually placing each finger. In this way, it will register what is called 'the palmar impression', being scanned completely with precision and, according to the security of this biometric sensor, it is 100%.

The palmar impression is collected as soon as the baby is born, in the same delivery room or operating room, together with the biological mother and, then, the data is linked to that of the mother to allow identification without errors or confusion.

In other words, the biometric reader will record both the mother's fingerprints and those of her baby immediately after birth, in order to be an unequivocal, exact and permanent identification of the newborn.

It should be taken into account that many times making the registration of the newborn's footprints becomes a bit difficult because his hand is so small, because of the presence of amniotic fluid, blood or even because of the possible hypothermia that he may suffer in that moment.

On the other hand, when radiofrequency identification is carried out, it allows monitoring in real time, both the mother and the baby and we can detect at all times where each one is.

If the mother and child are separated or more than the statutory meters apart, an alarm will sound activating the security system of the hospital or private center, which will automatically close the doors of the hospital and block the elevators, thus avoiding theft, kidnapping or manipulation of the newborn within the same maternity.

This is how the new innovative technology for biometric registration and radiofrequency identification works, waiting for it to be extended to all public or private maternity centers around the world, for greater and complete peace of mind for parents and protection of newborns.

To conclude, allow me to leave a recommendation that should also be met in all maternity wards and is to transfer the newborn with his mother immediately after birth, after performing early attachment and primary care by the pediatrician (unless there is any eventuality in terms of their health or vitality, which must be kept in Reten) so that they can start breastfeeding within the first hour of their birth and be safe from their mother, for a greater security control of it.
