Touch, taste, hearing, sight and, lastly, smell. They are the five senses that human beings have, however smell is the one that receives the least attention. But is this always the case? Well no, smell is a sense that atrophies over time and with little use. That is why children tend to smell everything, whether pleasant or unpleasant.

In fact, smell is one of the most developed senses in the newborn. Babies recognize people by smells, especially their mother and those closest to him.

Already from the gestation period the baby begins to develop the sense of smell, always thanks to the hormonal union that it shares with its mother. Amniotic fluid, food and other external odors will begin to be part of the child's universe even without being born. Once the child comes into the world, his nose is his best ally to recognize his mother and look for her breast in search of food and as the days go by he also recognizes relatives by their smell.

When the child is small has the ability to get used to smellsWhether they are good or bad, that is why they are capable of being in a bad-smelling cabin or approaching anything stinking to their nose, they are simply recognizing, learning. As the responses to smells grow, they become more calculated since it knows how to distinguish between a good and a bad smell.

Identifying smells is the way that children and the not so young protect themselves and recognize their environment. For example, the smell of something burned makes our brain alert. The first time a child smells something burned, they don't know what they are dealing with, but once their mind associates that certain smell with a certain dangerous situation, the second time they smell it their brain will instantly go on alert and natural.

You can enhance the child's ability to smell through fun games, you will not only be developing that sense, but memory and sensations will also enter the scene. Introduce different things with characteristic smells such as mint, lemon, garlic, etc ... and blindfold the child so that he can recognize the smells, perhaps the first one will find it difficult since he may not know them, but surely the third, like a lot, it's the charm, and asks you for new smells to continue experimenting.

It is also through smell that their first emotions are created and this is because smell is located in the brain in the area of emotions, motivation or memory, that's why even as adults, there are people who have many memories based on olfactory experiences. Who has not had a memory completely forgotten and it seems that it was yesterday when a smell that we associate with that moment reaches our noses. This also happens with the other senses, but not in the way that smell does.

One thing is clear and that is smell is a primary sense in the development of a childSince feeding, emotional and mental development, and in short, the survival of the child depend on the sense of smell.
